Black Pearls: The Antidote to Convention
Black Pearls: The Antidote to Convention
Pearls signal refinement and elegance perhaps more than any other single accessory. A string of uniform white pearls on June Cleavers neck told us she was a woman of quality, a woman her husband could be proud to take to the bosss house for dinner. Englands Queen Elizabeth, the very epitome of privilege and etiquette, is almost never seen without a string of pearls.
Not every woman fits that picture, though. If you love nice things, but the message youd rather give the world is one of inscrutability, a message that you cant be pinned down, that the one thing anyone can know for sure about you is that you will never be boring, try a string of rare black pearls.
What Are Black Pearls?
Black pearls are formed in a particular type of oyster, the black-lipped oyster, which is native to the South Pacific. Extremely rare throughout history, black pearls are now more common thanks to cultivation techniques that allow mass production. Cultivation is the process of seeding oysters to induce them to produce pearls. This has brought the price down into the budget of the average jewelry buyer. Black pearls are still far less common than white or pink pearls, though.
Black pearls are not a true black, instead the color generally has a dark gray base with overtones that may include blues, greens, purples, and even red. Black pearls generally have a high luster, making the many overtones shimmer like opals. White pearls can be stained to appear to be black pearls, so be sure to purchase from a reputable jeweler, or ask for an authentication.
Care of Black Pearls
Pearls should be wiped with a soft cloth after wearing to remove skin oils from them. You should also avoid exposing the pearls to hair spray, perfume, soaps and detergents, as all of these chemicals can cause damage to the pearls. Never use abrasives of any kind to clean pearls, as this will remove the luster and rub away the pearl itself. Also, being creatures of the sea, pearls hate long term exposure to dry air. If you live in a dry climate, be sure to take special care storing your pearls.
Adorn yourself with the very embodiment of mystery, uniqueness, and that special quality that the white pearled women cant admit that they want. A woman that can wear black pearls deserves to wear them proudly.
